Dealing with conflict & emotional stress



In order to deal with emotional stress and conflict effectively it is important to recognize and understand the reason or cause of it in oneself and in others. This preliminary workshop will help participants identify sources and types of conflict within the work environment, appreciate different perspectives and learn a variety of effective techniques, strategies and styles that can be implemented for managing and improving both communication and emotional stress.


Communication and the effects on conflict and emotional stress: Recognizing the 4 styles of communication Conflict & The Organization: What is conflict? Types of conflict within organizations, Sources of organizational conflict (Interdependence, Employment relationship, Limited resources, Differentiation), Impact on the organization (positive/negative) Recognising different perspectives of conflict within organizations: Conflict resolution roles, Conflict handling strategies, Conflict handling styles, Conflict outcomes Stress Management: What is stress? Stress and the workplace, Impact on the workplace, Reduced performance, Motivation & Job satisfaction Recognising the general adaption syndrome: Physical/behavioral symptoms, Eustress Managing stress in the workplace: Role of management/the individual, Support programs, Personal coping strategies, anxiety management, Cognitive restructuring, Appraisal, problem and emotion focused coping Discussion and debate with practical exercises


This introductory course is aimed at people who wish to develop their personal effectiveness and increase their confidence in building good working relationships when dealing with conflict and emotional stress in the work environment.
